Abstract:

The financial records of the Pennsylvania Hospital have been housed in the Pine Building since its completion, resulting in a remarkably complete set of records, which reflect the development of the Hospital from 1751 until approximately 1920, when there appear to have been changes in record-keeping procedures and shifts in responsibilities of key hospital personnel. This collection is 140 linear feet, with the majority of the records being paper documents and ledger books.

The Financial records are an important source of information on all aspects of early hospital operation, including activities such as buying food and wood, purchases of land, construction of buildings, and taxation. These records are also a rich source of genealogical data. Early patient information can be found in many of the ledgers and cash books, and the Estates and Trusts subseries in the Treasurer's papers contains many wills, which provide, in some cases, detailed lineage and family data.
