Deftly plotted with fascinating characters, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters wallows in the depths of psychological intrigue while illuminating the marginalized roles of women in Victorian England. The story is powerfully narrated by Sue and Maud, two orphaned women from opposite worlds of privilege and poverty who struggle between intelligence and instinct to discover they share an inexplicably intertwined destiny. Sue grows up in a Dickensian den of thieves or "fingersmiths" in the slums of London, where a scam means survival. Maud lives a sheltered, privileged life in the country as secretary to her book collector uncle. Sue is brought into Maud's life and opens her mind and heart when the ironically monikered Gentleman makes Sue a tool in a scheme to take advantage of Maud's inheritance. The story moves through the lush greenery of the country, the dusty scourge of Victorian London, and the humid desperation of a madhouse with sensual details that envelop the reader as Gentleman's plan goes devastatingly awry.
