Abstract:

In 1789-90, ordinary women were shipped from Britain to Sydney, Australia, to become the founding mothers of the struggling penal colony. Some women endured more of the same heartbreak they had left behind in the Old World. Rees tells their stories, from tales of imprisonment and exile, to setting up profitable businesses, to giving birth and establishing marriages aboard ship, to eventual acceptance into the largely-male Australian society.
