Abstract:

This paper aims to (a) examine in detail the trends in food imports, their composition and the degree of food import dependency in Somalia. It also seeks to (b) analyze various micro and macro economic channels through which both foreign food aid as well as imprudent domestic economic policies have resulted in Somalia's excessive reliance on imported food. The paper also hopes to (c) highlight main policy options that both Somali decisionmakers and her foreign aid donors should consider in order to arrest Somalia's accelerating trend in food import dependency.
