Abstract:
Shortly after the second Intifada began in the fall of 2000, filmmaker Michal Aviad turned the camera on herself to document the anxieties and fears of living and raising a family in Israel. Interweaving public and private archival footage and home videos, she meditates on her grandparents' migration to Israel to escape persecution in Europe and to find a homeland. Chronicling her own migrations from Israel to San Francisco and back again, she wonders if her family will have to be transplanted as well, as she searches for signs of hope and safety for her children's uncertain future in Israel. Her grandparents' struggle and family history illuminate broader issues of identity, values, and the Jewish immigrant experience.
