Abstract:

The theme of the story is the character of Juan Santa Cruz, the only son of a wealthy bourgeois family in Madrid late nineteenth century. In his student days, the young leads a dissipated life in which meets and becomes infatuated with Fortunata, beautiful girl of humble. Juan seduces Fortunata and becomes her lover but ends up getting bored of it and disappear from her life. His mother decides to marry him to his niece Jacinta. During the honeymoon, the young man tells his wife his adventures through the slums of Madrid.
