Abstract:

(Producer) Four Lives is not a film about people who occasionally get the blues. In a depressed state, these patients have exaggerated feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and anxiety. When manic, they experience extreme feelings of ambition and self-confidence. If the high escalates, a person can become grandiose, dangerously extravagant, incessantly talkative and socially uninhibited. One in six with manic depressive illness will commit suicide if untreated. The film explores current treatments including medication and psychotherapy, as well as the more controversial electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
