Abstract:

Correspondence, memoranda, speeches, testimonies, proceedings, writings, reports and studies, laboratory notebooks and notes, patient files and records, research files, academic material, subject file, biographical material, family and estate papers, press releases and clippings, printed matter, photographs, digital files, and other papers documenting Kelsey's career, particularly as a researcher and regulator investigating new drugs at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) where she later served as director of the Division of Scientific Investigations. Includes material on her refusal to approve commercial distribution of thalidomide in the United States, a decision for which she received the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service in 1962. Also includes materials documenting her work as a pharmacologist and instructor at the University of Chicago in Illinois and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.; articles written by Kelsey while an editorial associate for the American Medical Association (1950-1952); memoranda from Kelsey to John Patrick Swann, FDA historian; background material and drafts for Essentials of Pharmacology (1960), a textbook she coauthored with her husband F.E. Kelsey and E.M.K. Geiling; and files of F.E. Kelsey pertaining to his work at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., and as assistant to the U.S. surgeon general. Subjects include the FDA's Bioresearch Monitoring Program, clinical and laboratory practices, fraud in science, quackery, teratology,and history of the FDA.
