Abstract:

The collection relates to Colonel Franklin Matthias's work as commanding officer and area engineer of the Hanford Engineer Works where the plutonium for the first atomic bomb was produced. It contains: photographs of Richland, Washington, and the construction of different sites at the Hanford Engineer Works; views of baseball games, the mess hall, and prefabricated housing units in Richland Village; photographs of Franklin Matthias and site visitors (among these are General Leslie Groves, Vannevar Bush, James Conant and unidentified Congressmen); 6 combat photographs released as publicity by the Signal Corps, U.S. Army; an American newspaper political cartoon showing Hitler screaming, "Hurry up and invent the secret weapon Goebbels says we have."; phonograph records of an Army-Navy E Award ceremony (Oct. 10, 1945) and "Richland Remote"; one motion picture of 44 minutes of the Hanford-Richland 25th Anniversary seminar held in 1968 at the Argonne National Laboratory. This includes information on the history of plutonium and the construction of the production site at Hanford. There is also coverage of the morning press conference, sessions on in the B-reactor building, and plutonium separation, and an evening banquet. Speakers includes General Leslie Groves, Glenn Seaborg, John Wheeler, Dale Babcock, Norman Hilberry, O.H. Greager, Lawrence M. Richards, Lombard Squires, George Watt. There is also footage of abandoned areas.
