Abstract:

Bob Coleman of the State Department brings a contingent of musicians from Odolo, East Africa, to Frank's restaurant. They all immediately want to date Anna-May. Adele asks Miss Marie as an honored elder to pray for their safe return home. The musicians delegate Ibrahim, their best cook, to show Big Arthur and Shorty how to cook African food, which uses many of the same ingredients (yams, peanuts and black-eyed peas). They invite the staff of the restaurant to their concert on Thursday night, but Frank has tickets to hear Dizzy Gillespie. Adele is a jazz fan and is very impressed. Instead of the show on Thursday night, the staff of the restaurant is invited to a rehearsal; no one can resist moving to the beat of the powerful African drums. To thank Adele, Frank arranges for him to accompany him and Hannah to an late night club where Dizzy is slated to play after his show. The next day, Adele immerses himself in Frank's late father's jazz record collection and announces he is not going home; he wants to stay in the United States and become a jazz musician. Bob Coleman explains to Frank that the dictator Colonel Simbe runs Odolo, which is important to the United States for mineral imports and Middle East foreign relations; the Colonel forbids jazz to be played because it is ethically polluting; Adele is a national treasure and for him to defect would be like Elvis Presley defecting to the Russians. Adele could never go home again. Frank tells Adele he cannot help him. Adele runs away from the State Department contingent and goes back to the nightclub. At first Gillespie's drummer refuses to let him play, but later he relents, and at the end of the show, Adele is heading for the stage to play the drums.
