I am a school teacher with three children of my own. I first read this charming and beautifully written book, then passed it onto my son and oldest daughter. All three of us love it!!! It is must read for any middle school student. The story features a smart, sassy 13 year old girl with a hilarious family and even funnier best friend. Suddenly a strange new neighbor moves in. Lucas DUnn is mysterious, handsome, and hiding a dark secret. As Franny spends her summer in one funny antic after another taking care of the wild animals she rescues on her farm, she and Lucas encounter some serious danger. Will she make the right choice to get help, or will she worry about betraying a friend in need? Franny struggles with some serious coming of age issues, that McKinnon tackles with delicacy, sensitivity and lovely writing. This debut novel is full of gorgeous descriptive segments, heartwarming sentiments, family trials and laughs, and friendship adventures. All of it comes seamlessly together with the wonderful animal characters who lend heart and hope. I will be recommending this fantastic book to all my students, family and friends. What a wonderful role model, and what a wonderful read full of hope and promise. Like me, I hope you laugh and cry from start to finish. This is one for our whole family to treasure on our bookshelf!
