Abstract:

Other courtyards in Europe, provoking the jealousy of his contemporaries, and from 1835 to 1868 he exhibited almost every year portraits and genre scenes at the Salon de Paris, and in 1839 he won a first class medal and the Legion of Honor. for the portrait of King Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, the All-Paris commissioned him paintings, and he must be helped by his students and his brother Hermann, to honor all his orders. Medmond About admits in 1857 that "M . Winterhalter is not without talent and meets sometimes the elegance of (Thomas) Lawrence ". His work immediately meets the recognition of the public who is ecstatic in front of his Decameron (Salon of 1839) or in front of the portrait of the Empress Eugenie surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting (Salon of 1855). Exploitant archives, letters and original sources, retracing the life and work of the brothers Winterhalter, this study traces the fate of two brothers who saw before them the most prominent personalities of the nineteenth century. A catalog raisonné accompanies this study."--Page 4 of cover, translation by Google Books.
