Abstract:

The threat of extinction had been hovering over the Indigenous Australians of Victoria when Wurundjeri elder Simon Wonga led his people to the banks of the Yarra River, establishing a new home they called Coranderrk. The community prospered through the governance of Wonga and Scottish preacher John Green until the Aboriginal Protection Board seized their land. Under the newly-enacted Half-Caste law, children were taken from their parents, and the Wurundjeri were displaced once again. This documentary tells the story of Coranderrk, a bitter episode in the First Australians' fight for self-determination. With historians Wayne Atkinson (Yorta Yorta Nation) and Liz Reed, Margaret Gardiner (Wurundjeri Clan), Jim Berg (Gunditjmara Nation), and others.
