Intense poetry by award winning poet Ntozake Shange is illustrated with stunning paintings by Rod Brown. Individual poems tell the story of the Underground Railroad –the slaves, the overseers, the beatings, the dogs and the fleeing., there is an incident attributed to Sojourner Truth that other reviewers have said might not be accurate but the book is a wonderful discussion starter for middle and high school classes on slavery and the American Civil War.
