I love to recommend books to interested readers and I'm currently reading a book that is very worthy of recommendation.. the book is French Women Don't Get Fat: The Secret of Eating for Pleasure by Mireille Guiliano. Published last year, it quickly became a nationwide best seller. As it says on the inside cover, this book is about the idea that "French women don't get fat, but they do enjoy bread and pastry, wine, and regular three-course meals.. while staying slim and healthy." The book says that it "emphasizes freshness, variety, balance, and always pleasure," which it most definitely does. Now, I know what you may be thinking... 'oh no, this is yet another dramatic diet book that will present complicated, difficult to sustain dietary changes that will be so intimidating upon first glance that I will never even finish the book, let alone implement the strategy that it presents.' Trust me, I've been there too- especially given the emphasis placed upon the importance of personal appearance and the way that the ideal clashes with the stereotypical modern American lifestyle (fast food, anyone?).However, this book does exactly what it claims to do: it presents a balanced, healthy, sustainable plan for lifestyle and dietary changes that really works. This book is not about dropping 20 pounds by Christmas or about trying to be a size that is unhealthy for your body type. What it IS about is how to enjoy food without overindulging or taking an inordinate amount of time completely overhauling every aspect of your nutritional and exercise routines.I know it's hard to believe, but having been to France I can attest to the fact that French women, on average, truly seem to be much healthier and more fit than American women. It was a bit shocking for me to realize, at the age of 20, that most of the 40 and 50 year old women around me were much, much more fit than I was, despite the aforementioned French affinities for wine, cheese, and luxurious dining. In any case, I highly encourage people of all ages to read this book- especially given that obesity and weight-related health problems are on the rise in the US right now. It could make a huge difference in your life or in the life of someone close to you.
