"My mother was a test tube, my father was a knife."One of Heinlein's last efforts before he died, and one of his most enjoyable. I've read it over a dozen times end to end and countless times piecemeal; it's *that* much fun!Friday Jones is an artificial construct, AKA "test tube baby." Constructed of all the finest genetic material, she has abilities significantly above "normal" humans. (i.e. she can't beat a thoroughbred in quarter mile run, but she'll leave today's fastest 400m men eating her dust; after the race she could beat up all their bodyguards at simultaneously).Living in a world that disdains her ilk, she needs those talents to get by in her career as a super-courier for a corporation run by an old man who may or may not have contributed some of his own genes to her DNA.This is a world that's divided into countries headed by corporations, populated by "group" families bound by renewable marriage contracts as opposed to vows, and seems to have as many religions as people. (Scientology alone has splintered into several sects including the Elronners, Hubbardites, and New Scientologists.)Friday's trouble begins when her boss dies and she has to find new work in this world that is distrustful of her "Species." How can she survive when she not only doesn't know who to trust, but can't tell who trusts her?The world Robert Heinlein creates in "Friday" is believeable and simple, yet sufficiently advanced enough to let you know it's science fiction. However, it stands alone as a simple adventure story with some serious introspection on the human condition thrown in. I'd recommend this for anyone who likes a great yarn, not just sci-fi fans.
