Abstract:

In Roch Carrier's The sweater, in rural 1940s Québec, a boy is mortified when his mother orders him a new hockey sweater from a catalog, and due to a mix-up, he receives a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater instead of the sweater of his beloved Montreal Canadiens. Wilma Riley's controversial Pies shows how two neighbors are able to heal the wounds of prejudice over coffee. Snow Cat, by Dayal Kaur Khalsa, is a timeless tale where love endures in the face of loss, while her whimsical I want a dog applauds a child's ingenuity.
