This is a helpful resource for those who are new to studying or reviewing children’s literature. It offers brief background information on the history of publishing for children and the parts of a book. The author breaks the whole of children’s writing into individual categories and defines the essential characteristics of each, so the reader can form an opinion on whether a given book is of good quality. One of the best things about this book is the inclusion of passages from quality children’s books that the author uses to illustrate specific devices and styles. The last chapter focuses solely on writing reviews and includes information on citation. This book is easy to read and flows well. It is set up so that readers can focus on one specific category, such as non-fiction books, or it can be read the entire way through. Those who have studied children’s literature in the past may not find it as useful, as many of the terms discussed will be familiar. However, it is a great resource for beginners looking to write reviews or even for those who are evaluating children’s literature for their personal use.
