Abstract:

Belief in the afterlife has become increasingly difficult for many contemporary Christians to cherish as part of their personal expression of faith. This book opens the way to recapture a vibrant belief in the afterlife that can affect the enthusiasm of Christian life in the technological age. The author strikes to the core of the Christian, and particularly Catholic, doctrines regarding a general resurrection, the last judgment, heaven, hell, purgatory, and the assorted culturally-generated images evoked by these doctrines. The book cautions about using these elements of faith experience to induce fear. He presents active Christian love as the catalyst for renewing life with optimism for today and with hope for the future. This love is redemptive and needs to be directed to those millions whom the book characterizes as "the living dead". These are the multitudes of people entombed in their indifference, buried by anxiety, or suffocated by their unhealed memories of past suffering. All these people are in desperate need of God's reconciling and redeeming love. That same love constitutes and conditions the refreshing and contemporary understanding of life after death presented by the author. He demonstrates that Christians with such a view of the afterlife can be the active agents for making God's love present in the world.
