注意: Fig. 1.--Collection localities for frogs used in crosses (numbers correspond to Table 1). Numbers 1, 2, 5, 6, and 13 (Arroyo Salado, Rt. 83, ca. 15 km W McAllen, Texas); 22 (Sitting Bull Falls, Guadalupe Mtns., Eddy Co., New Mexico); 26 and 27 (Nueces R., ca. 10 km E Carrizo Springs, Texas); 32 and 36 (ca. 25 km S Sheffield, Texas at Independence Ck.); 3, 4, 7-12, 14-21, 23-25, 28-31, 34, and 38 (N Sinaloa, vic. Guasave). The X's represent populations of berlandieri-like frogs of uncertain taxonomic affiliation encountered during the fieldwork associated with this study.
Fig. 2.--Zymogram showing serum protein (albumin) phenotypes for semi-siblings of R. b. berlandieri (B), R. b. forreri (F) and their hybrids (H) produced in crosses with R. b. berlandieri females. The presence of the R. b. forreri allele for albumin (believed not to occur in R. b. berlandieri) confirms the biparental contribution to the suspected hybrids.
Fig. 3.--Representative sound spectrograms of mating trills of (A) R. b. berlandieri (Sitting Bull Falls, Eddy Co., New Mexico at 17°C) and (B) R. b. forreri (San Blas, Sinaloa at 21°C). The note length of the R. b. forreri call is of considerably greater duration (in spite of the call-temperature differential) than that of R. b. berlandieri.

摘要:

The leopard frog Rana berlandieri is presently considered to be comprised of three subspecies: R. b. berlandieri; R. b. forreri; and R. b. brownorum. In two of the purported races, genetic similarity was investigated by assessing interpopulation genetic compatibility and spermatocyte bivalent formation in interpopulation hybrids. Primary structural components of racial mating trills were analyzed and compared. The data do not support the recognition of R. b. berlandieri and R. b. forreri as conspecifics.
