Correspondence, writings, military dispatches and telegrams, notes, reports, scrapbooks, printed matter, maps, and other papers relating chiefly to Lander's activities surveying and exploring overland routes through the West and to his Civil War service in Virginia and Maryland under George Brinton McClellan and Chas. P. Stone. Documents his work as chief engineer and superintendent of the Fort Kearney, South Pass, and Honey Lake Wagon Road. Also documents his advocacy of a western railroad system and his political activities in California. Includes material pertaining to an affair involving John Fox Potter and Roger A. Pryor. Correspondents include Simon Cameron, Jefferson Davis, John B. Floyd, John W. Garrett, Moses Kelly, Joseph Lane, George B. McClellan, J.A. McDougall, William S. Rosecrans, Winfield Scott, and Lansing Stout.
