Abstract:

Sir Humphrey Rossiter is the Home Secretary of England, staying with his good friend Lord Keynsham for a few days of hunting. He is called back to London to officiate at the hanging of a murderer, Mr Brandt. On the way to London, he is abducted and threatened by masked men with being hung himself. He is released after promising to review new evidence in the murder. However, when Rossiter returns to London he collapses and is unable to delay the execution. Several weeks later, while waiting at his home for the wife of the murdered man, he is abducted again, this time under the nose of Scotland Yard. The wife, actress E. Brandt, is taken as well. Scotland Yard in unable to discover the whereabouts of the missing Home Secretary. Despite assigning top dectectives, they cannot find out who or where he was held. The junior detective on the team, Ernest Panks, asks to be dismissed from the force so that he can go undercover and try to discover the gang who are holding Rossiter.
