Abstract:

Of all the legendary and elegant wooden speedboats and runaboats currently collected and restored, Gar Woods, named for their flamboyant creator, are arguably the most coveted. Whereas Chris Craft survived the Great Depression and World War II to enjoy prolific production, only 3,500 Gar Woods were ever built -- of those, only a few hundred are known to exist today.

While this history presents Gar Wood the man in marvelous detail, this is more than the story of the person and the company he founded in 1930 -- it is a photohistory of the magnificent boats themselves, and the extraordinary design, craftsmanship, and materials that made them legendary. Special attention is given to the Baby Gar, as well as runabouts, speedsters, utilities, and express cruisers -- all built in Wood's Michigan boatworks. Photographs also record Wood's use of racing events as a testing ground For the designs of his cohorts. Nap Lisee and Norman Bet Geddes.
