Intriguing science fiction, great read

An intriguing story about a boy named Mason who discovers an autotroph at the research lab where his mother works. An autotroph is a human who can feed itself by the process of photosynthesis. The book has a mystery -- who is the gardener and why would he create autotrophs? Who betrays the autotrophs...
