Summary:
Over the past decade there has been an increased interest in improving the aerodynamic efficiency of general aviation aircraft. This interest has caused an increase in the level of research in the fields of laminar flow airfoil design and configuration development.

The final paper discusses a method which can be used by pilots, to choose the optimum cruising speed for their aircraft.

The first group of papers in this special publication discusses the effects of propeller slipstream on a wing boundary layer, insect contamination protection, and manufacturing tolerances for laminar flow airframe surfaces. Also discussed are the results of an experimental investigation of a single engine aircraft utilizing a natural laminar flow wing and an analytical study of the benefits of using natural laminar flow on a regional (commuter) aircraft.

The second group of papers addresses the questions related to optimizing an airplane design. These papers discuss the results of analytical studies of the parameter important in the design of Canard configured aircraft, and three surface lifting systems.  Read more...
