In 1879, Jose Jesus Lopez led a band of 17,000 sheep from Edward Fitzgerald Beale's Tejon Ranch in Kern, California, across the Alida Desert of Nevada, through Idaho, to Green River, Wyoming. Beale wanted better pasturage for his sheep. After many wrong turns and desert trials, about 8,500 sheep reached Wyoming.

In 1879, Jose Jesus Lopez led a band of 17,000 sheep from Edward Fitzgerald Beale's Tejon Ranch in Kern, California, across the Alida Desert of Nevada, through Idaho, to Green River, Wyoming. Beale wanted better pasturage for his sheep. After many wrong turns and desert trials, about 8,500 sheep reached Wyoming.
