Abstract:

All but two items concern Seymour's activities in 1860-1877 before he became Bishop of Springfield, with substantial correspondence about his election as bishop in 1878 and Low Church opposition thereto. Most of the collection consists of correspondence with Bishop Whittingham about the affairs of the General Theological Seminary in New York City, including Seymour's role as professor of ecclesiastical history and Dean of the Seminary, 1864-1877. Other subjects are the consecration of the Church of the Holy Innocents, Annandale, N.Y., 1860; affairs of St. John's Church, Brooklyn, N.Y.; attempts to elect Seymour Bishop of Colorado, 1873; a dispute with Bishop A. Cleveland Coxe, 1874; Seymour's election as Bishop of Illinois, 1874-1875, which was not confirmed; his association with the Society for Promotion of Religion and Learning in New York; defections of Episcopal clergymen to the Roman Catholic Church; High Church principles; and correspondence with Bishop Thomas H. Vail. A letter of 1878 states the policy of the General Theological Seminary toward Black students: Seymour is as ready to admit them as white candidates. The two letters dating from his episcopate concern minor clergy matters and the illness of Bishop Joseph C. Talbot of Indiana.
