Gettysburg: 'Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.' These are the opening lines of the Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous and oft-quoted speeches in American history, delivered by President Abraham Lincoln on the 19th November 1863 and outlining the ethos at the heart of the American Civil War, namely the abolition of slavery.
