Abstract:

Widow Brown disapproves of the love affair between her daughter, Grace, and Billy Hill. The two lovers are in despair. The widow has a house, which is reputed to be haunted and which she cannot get rid of. Billy's father, Silas, and his cousin, Jasper Green, are rivals for the widow's hand and property. The widow pledges her hand to the first one who can secure permanent tenants for the house. Silas almost wins by bribing a man to live there, but Jasper, dressed up as a ghost, frightens the man away. Jasper bribes a friend to move in, but Silas plays the same game and drives the tenant out. Billy sees his dad with ghostly raiment and secures a promise from Widow Brown that Grace will be his if he catches the ghosts. Grace tells both Silas and Jasper that the house is rented. Billy purchases "Tanglefoot" brand flypaper. The two rivals don their ghost outfits, scare each other and get tangled up in the flypaper. Billy and Grace capture them and reveal their identities to the widow, who drives them out with a broom. She consents to their marriage.
