Children's stories, Japanese
|Material Type:||Fiction, Juvenile audience|
|All Authors / Contributors:||
Lafcadio Hearn; John Davis Batchelder Collection (Library of Congress)
Based on: Bakegumo.
On double leaves, Japanese style (fukuro toji), crepe paper (chirimen-bon).
The publication year 1899 is retained in the colophons of multiple printings preceding the reissue of 1926 (Perkins & Perkins' "third edition"). The earliest printing(s) give the date of publication as April 10, and have Hasegawa's "10 Hyoshicho" address (confirmed as the "real first edition" colophon in a letter from Hasegawa to the Perkins from Hasegawa); some later printings (Perkins & Perkins' "second edition") have colophon with date of publication July 10 (apparently an error), with the "38 Honmura-cho" address; the latest printings, with colophon preceded by "All rights reserved" in Japanese and English, return to the date of publication April 10, but with the post-1910 "17 Kami Negishi" address (noted by Perkins & Perkins, but not treated as representing a separate "edition"). BAL mistakenly reproduces the last as the form found in "what is presumed to be the earliest printing."
