Early in the twentieth century as Americans climbed into their Model-Ts and took to the open road, U.S. manufacturers and retailers saw miles and miles of untapped promotional opportunity. The audaciously over-sized billboard has recruited, congratulated, sold, seduced, teased, taught, praised, and promoted everything under the sun ever since. In this book, America's ever-shifting social, cultural, political, and economic landscape is illustrated decade by decade, from 1900 to 2000, through the bold and evocative graphics of 260 posters, signs, and billboards. The book focuses on trends in fashion, food, transportation, recreation, entertainment, travel, and more. Offering a lively look back at the last century's cultural zeitgeist, this collection is a visual record of a largely unheralded and seldom reproduced American art form.--From publisher description.
