Abstract:

On impulse following a major family row, David decides to leave his native Welsh mining village and head north to Scotland where he finds work as a deck hand on the Fair Lassie. He is soon part of the crew, and also becomes more than aware of Spice, niece to Zannah, owner and skipper of the Spizannah. Then he receives an offer that will take him to the end of the world for two long years; at the same time Zannah offers him the Spizannah for his own. Faced with such a choice he discovers that he is no longer the "green hand."
