The film adaptation was one that need not have been made. The original Grey Gardens is one of the best, yet the most disturbing films I have ever seen. I still don't know whether to feel sorry for the Edies for not having family that cared enough to get them mental health help... Lire la suite...
The film adaptation was one that need not have been made. The original Grey Gardens is one of the best, yet the most disturbing films I have ever seen. I still don't know whether to feel sorry for the Edies for not having family that cared enough to get them mental health help or slap them for being crazy rich weirdos.
This feature film could not capture the utter horror of seeing the actual Edies live happily and obliviously in their strange and cat filth-ridden world; eating pate and crackers and butter pecan ice cream from a mini-fridge in their shared bedroom.
The odd juxtaposition of a portrait of Big Edie wearing a dress that might have been designed by Lanvin with a 3 foot string of pearls a two-year-old would choke on and her then preference for covering her nakedness loosely with terry cloth towel-like garments is striking.
There was no way for this feature film to measure up to the shock and awe of the real lives of these women as captured by the Brothers Mayles.
