Papers of Gunnar H. Nordbye, including speeches, correspondence and other papers regarding judicial conferences and Minnesota civil procedures; files relating to the legal proceedings to quiet title to the Lewis and Clark papers (1953-1961), for which Nordbye was presiding judge; memorials to judges William Mitchell and John B. Sanborn; and Nordbye's interests in Norwegian-American organizations.

Nordbye graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1912 and practiced law in Minnesota. In 1922 he was made a judge of the Minneapolis Municipal Court, and later of Hennepin County District Court, and in 1931 he was appointed to the U.S. District Court.
