Title in red and black.
The Catholicon was printed in Mainz by the Printer of the Catholicon, not before 1469. Cf. ISTC. "Also recorded as [Johann Gutenberg?], 1460 and [between 1460 and about 1472]"--ISTC.
"The provenance of the copy of the Catholicon, from which these leaves come, is most interesting. The book was in the possession of Sir Hans Sloane prior to 1753 when it was acquired by Trustees of the newly founded British Museum, and it was stamped by them as a duplicate in 1804. It next appeared in the Library of Henry W. Poor at whose sale in November 1908 it was bought by Alvin W. Krech ... (That this copy of the Catholicon came into Hans Sloane's possission by bequest from William Courten, a member of an eminent Huguenot family, and that it was acquired by him in tours made in Germany between 1677 and 1679 can hardly be doubted. And presumably it is the copy, listed among the 'Exemplaires disparus, ' which was sold by the British Museum as a duplicate, 20 February 1805; and which apparently changed hands at the Roach sale, 10 December 1824.) The book from which the leaves come is incomplete, lacking a considerable number of leaves and thus making distribution feasible, in the manner described herein"--Prospectus.
