Abstract:

The period is 1970-72 and the city of Calcutta is in the grip of a leftist militant movement known as Naxalbari. Sujata Chaatterji is a middle aged, traditional submissive, unprotesting, upper middle class lady. Corpse no. 1084 in the police morgue belongs to her youngest son. This awakening starts her on a journey of discovery. She struggles to understand her son's militant commitment and begins to recognize her own alienation and the complacent, hypocritical bourgeoise society her son had rebelled against.
