Abstract:

The collection consists of a mimeographed report and accompanying transmittal letter on the "Harlem Project" on the "Role of the School in Preventing and Correcting Maladjustment and Delinquency." The Project, which involved enhanced curriculum, assignment of extra teachers, and provision of services by psychologists and social workers, for three selected schools, was carried out during 1943-1945; the report, which evaluates the results of the project, was prepared in 1947 and released in 1948.

Funding for the project was provided by the board of Education, the New York Foundation, and the Hofheimer Fund. Research for the report was supervised by a committee headed by Justice Justine Wise Polier and carried out by Sophie M. Robison and Irving Lorge of the Institute of Educational Research, Teachers College, Columbia University.
