Summary:	One of the Civil War's most distinguished units was made up of a volatile mix of personalities. On one hand, half of the elite and highly literate officers came from old-money New England Circles -- many were connected to or educated at Harvard University -- and their writings and poetry influenced how the North saw the course of war. On the other hand, the other half of the officer corps were made up of immigrant sons, Lincoln haters, and German and Irish troops who commiserated with their soldiers.
