Abstract:

Using archival film and photographs; interviews with historians and Hawaiians; and new cinematography, this film documents the life of Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaii's last monarch. Born in 1838, she was educated in Western academic disciplines and etiquette and was an accomplished musician and composer who spoke several languages. Upon her brother's death in 1891, she became Queen of Hawaii. In 1893, she was forced to surrender the throne to the U.S., and in 1895 abdicated the throne.
