Abstract:

Letters, diaries and miscellaneous papers belonging to the family of Helen Mar Whitney. The papers contain letters from Nauvoo, the Mormon Trail, Salt Lake City, and Arizona territory. Helen Mar Whitney material includes correspondence (1847-1880s), chiefly with her husband Horace and son Charles; and a daily diary (1885-1886). Topics include the social and political affairs in Salt Lake City. Material of Charles S. Whitney includes correspondence from his 2 1/2 years in Arizona, describing haying and customs of local populations; a daily diary (1881-1884). Horace K. Whitney's letters and diaries include two letters written on the Mormon trail, an account book (1850-1852) of the LDS printing office and tithing office (photocopy), a notebook (1869-1872, photocopy), diary of a trip to southern Utah (1863), and memorandum book (1860-1861). Orson F. Whitney material includes letters and reminiscences. Collection also includes letters by Fanny Murray and Vilate Kimball from the 1840s.
