Abstract:

The collection contains notes from Henry Cole's diaries, 1822-1834; printed reports on the School of Design, 1849, South Kensington Museum, 1860, and School of Art, 1864, by Cole; clippings about a testimonial upon Cole's retirement from the South Kensington Museum in 1873 and his obituary; photostats of two drawings from his diary of his holiday in Normandy in 1860; Cole family genealogical charts; and a list of Cole's publications.

Also contains a letter from Sir Robin Darwin, principal of the Royal College of Art, to A.G.C. Bennett, 20 April 1964, about Cole and his influence on art.

The notes from Cole's diary, in his own hand, were perhaps compiled in late life and this personal information is not included in his biography, Fifty years of public work of Sir Henry Cole (1884). He commences with his childhood and his education, anecdotes of his father, uncle and other relatives, their landlord Thomas Love Peacock, and frequently mentions John Stuart Mill, Charles Buller, and George Grote. He includes underlined references to his cousin Margaret Bond whom he married in 1833, and notes on frequent visits to the theater and to exhibitions, and lists of books read in 1833 and 1834.
