Abstract:

Settlement of a debt from William Cox and John Toplis to Samuel Grace, John Kennedy, and the estate of Henry Thrale. The agreement releases assets to Cox from Leonard Fosbrooke, Christopher Norris, Joseph Osborne, and John Webster; quitclaims the obligations to Grace and Kennedy; and settles with the Thrale estate by granting cash and a lease in Derbyshire held by Cox to the five Thrale executors (Hester Lynch Thrale, Samuel Johnson, John Cator, Jeremiah Crutchley, and Henry Smith).

Bearing signatures of Norris, Grace, Kennedy, Fosbrooke, Osborne, Webster, Hester L. Thrale, Johnson, Cator, Crutchley, Smith, and Toplis as parties to the agreement. In addition, the five Thrale executors (Cator, Crutchley, Johnson, Thrale, and Smith) signed a second time for the receipt of Cox's cash settlement. The document also bears the signatures of eight witnesses: James Lucas, J. Parker (twice), J. Harrison, W. Hardy, Benjamin Bradley, R. Hopkins (three times), Thomas Bullman (twice), and J. Ince.

On verso is an undated and unsigned portion of a related deed to land in Wiln and Shardlow, Derbyshire, mentioning Grace, Kennedy, Webster, and Henry Thrale.
