Abstract:

Diaries or journals (scattered years 1866-1928) of Henry Wells Magee, household expense ledgers or journals (1879-1909) and Christmas notes (1874) of Mrs. Magee, law office docket (1896-1910), correspondence, insurance policies, scrapbooks (1860-1922), bills and receipts, a few photographs, and a typescript copy (ca. 580 p.) of some of the originals in the collection, with reminiscences by Henry W. Magee, a Chicago lawyer. Topics include his early life, college years at Hillsdale College (Michigan), Chicago labor and transit issues, Civil War service in the 4th Michigan Infantry, General Ambrose E. Burnside, Southern conditions (1865), the West (1868), and world travels (1868-70), including a description of London (1870), comments on Julius Caesar Burrows and Sir Henry Morton Stanley.
