Discusses Jewish life in Spain, northern Europe and eastern Europe. Episode 5 looks at Jewish culture from the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492 to the French Revolution in 1789. Shows how a new intellectual climate in western Europe and economic opportunities in eastern Europe held promise for Jews and other minorities. Episode 6 beginning in 1789, explores the emancipation of Jews and others all across Europe, focusing on the Russian Jewish experience, the Dreyfuss case, and the birth of Zionism.
