Abstract:

The built heritage of Salima was partially damaged during the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990). The postwar reconstruction works of the returning displaced Christi ans threatened the remaining stone-built heritage and thus turned the attention of architects and conservationist NGOs to the protection of Salima's remaining s tone-built heritage (especially that of the Christian neighborhood) composed of vernacular dwellings, silk factories (19th century), Seraile (16th century), chu rches, and a Druze religious shrine. The case of Salima reveals a conflict between residents' needs of spatial growth and planners' efforts to preserve the stone-built heritage and morphology of th e town's fabric. The returning Christians first resisted conservation, since the y perceived that heritage conservation could freeze economic and spatial growth of their neighborhood and create further discontinuities and ruptures in their r elation to the town. However, Christians adopted the conservation principles aft er they perceived that the traditional fabric signifies their historical presenc e in Salima and increases their recognition by rival groups. The case of Salima is an example of clashing perceptions concerning what aspects of heritage maintain cultural and social continuity with place. The discussion poses the preservation of built heritage vis-a-vis "intangible" forms of heritag e (such as oral tradition and genealogical relatedness). The thesis demonstrates that conservation intervention needs to highlight the relation of built heritag e to the deeper intangible aspects or meanings that it embodies in the community 's contemporary context.
