Abstract:

The New Madrid Earthquake Zone, located along the Mississippi river near Memphis, Tennessee is named after a small river town in southern Missouri, which was destroyed during the most powerful series of earthquakes ever known on earth in 1811 and 1812. Some 2 million square miles were affected, with reports of strong shaking from as far away as Montreal - 1200 miles from the epicenter! With the aide of computer graphics, the geologic characteristics of the region are explained. According to experts, a future earthquake in the area could occur within the next 50 years. Due to the light seismic activity in the quake zone in the past, building codes have been lax, and have only recently mandated reinforced masonry. Should the New Madrid Earthquake Zone experience a major tremor as predicted, the result could be devastating. - Container.
