"While on a New year's Eve vacation, high school hoops star Troy and brainey Gabriella - two teens who are worlds apart - meet. During a karaoke contest they discover their love for singing and an interest in each other. After vacation, Troy finds out that Gabriella is the new girl at his school. Personally, every song in this movie is both 'hip' and has positive messages for those of any age. I thoroughly recommend it.

This movie, the brainchild of Peter Barsocchini and directed by the very talented Kenny Ortega, is made up of a cast of virtually unknowns and shines like a star. This movie, the brainchild of Peter Barsocchini and directed by the very talented Kenny Ortega, is made up of a cast of virtually unknowns and shines like a star. Auditions for the 2 leads were done in groups where Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens were paired up along with up to 10 other couples and won the lead roles. These two give such excellent performances that within the first 2 minutes they are very real to you, you can imagine being in their shoes. The hook is love of course. Once your hooked your there for the rest of the movie. These two are put through real situations, such as exploring who they are and what they can do, facing not only discrimination (the basketball star should ONLY play basketball, etc) but competition, devious fellow students causing harm to their relationship, teachers that don't understand them, etc. Of the music in this movie I can only use one word... Genius. Every song, though written by several different artists, is masterfully used to tell the story and each song in it's own right is a #1 hit. The songs each are positive messages for youth today and yet are really catchy and makes you want to listen to them again and again. (I thoroughly recommend the soundtrack which has an additional song not in the movie). You can find samples of the music (as well as others attempting to perform it) on http://youtube.com. I recommend at least going there to check it out, as well as going to the official site at www.disney.com.
