Lawyer, author, Confederate officer, U.S. Representative, and Cabinet member, Correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, clippings, speeches, autobiography, and travel accounts. Correspondence covers his years as Secretary of the Navy in the Cleveland Cabinet (1893-97), and the following years devoted to law practice in Washington, D.C. Other issues include political campaigns and conventions, diplomatic affairs, the South's Negro problem, and Reconstruction.
