Notes: "One of the best kept secrets in American cultural history is that theatre and other forms of live entertainment have had a long and vibrant tradition in the Hispanic community of the United States. Spanish language theatre was introduced north of the Rio Grande by the earliest colonizers and missionaries. This early folk and religious theatre became the foundation upon which was built an unbroken tradition that found its commercial flourishing in the 1920s and is currently undergoing a renascence. The studies contained in this volume document this tradition and its current manifestations from varied perspectives: artistic, literary, historical, anthropological, political. The illustrations included are reproductions of rare photographs contained in the national touring exhibit, "Two Centuries of Hispanic Theatre in the United States," directed by Nicolas Kanellos and sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the University of Houston"--Page 4 of cover.
