Abstract:

For hundreds of years the inns and taverns of Wales and the Marches have provided rest and refreshment for a diversity of customers: for kings and princes; highwaymen and drovers; for travellers of all kinds. Such buildings formed the heart of rural communities, places where locals and passers-by could meet and catch up on the news and gossip. This book explores over a hundred of the most interesting inns and taverns, describing in detail their history and providing information about their architectural development. It also recounts legends attached to the places in which the inns reside, and tales of the visitors of the past, from The Griffin Inn's reception of the poet Wordsworth in 1798, to the intriguing past ownership by the Knights Hospitallers of The White Hart at Llangibby. An introduction looks at the origin and development of pubs and inns and provides an account of the vernacular architecture of the region. Photographs, plans and cutaway reconstruction drawings clarify the text and enable the reader to understand the structure of the buildings. A visitor's guide to historic buildings which were central to town and village life, Historic Inns and Taverns of Wales and the Marches will be of interest to all who visit or travel in the region.
